Date/Year of commissioning: 25th August, 1976. The Department of Fuel and Mineral Engineering is actively engaged in teaching and research activities. The department has the distinction of launching the B Tech Programme in Mineral Engineering, the first such course in India. It is also involved in solving live industrial problems and serves the manpower development besides catering to the needs of the industry by way of continuing education programmes for the practicing engineers. It is well-equipped laboratories for academic and research activities.

The subject Mineral Engineering deals with the beneficiation and handling of ores, minerals and coal. India being a mineral rich country, there is a great demand for the Mineral Engineering both within and outside the country. Presently the department is offering the following courses:

Undergraduate Programme

A 4-year B. Tech programme in Mineral Engineering is being offered by the department since 1984, through a grant of about Rs 4.19 crores from the GOI Department of Mines. This program has a multifaceted orientation with a fine blend of Core subjects. More information on the course content of the subject is given in Academic Programmes described below.

Beside these programmes it has also offered two new M.Tech programmes in Bio-Mineral Processing and Clean Coal and Energy Technology from 2006 -07.

Integrated Programme

Mineral Engineering with Material Technology

Mineral Engineering with Mineral Resource Management

Post-Graduate Programme

Mineral Engineering

The four-semester programme in Mineral Engineering was initiated in 1975. The course is system oriented and elective based to cater to the student inputs from different engineering disciplines besides the Mineral Engineering graduates. Basic and advanced level courses in Geology, Material Handling, Mineral Engineering, Coal Preparation, and Computer Applications etc. are offered.

Fuel Engineering

The four-semester course in Fuel Engineering, started in 1976, caters to the manpower needs of the coal utilization industries. The course has a academic linkage with CFRI (under CSIR) to orient the students to large scale, continuous operations and also to expose them to expertise available in this premier national laboratory.

Bio-Mineral Processing

Clean Coal and Energy Technology

The department offers PhD registration for employed scientists and engineers on part time basis. Scholarships are also available for M Tech and PhD scholars.

Faculty members of the department has won many prestigious awards including 7 National Mineral award, one National Metallurgical day award, Indranil award, 5 R P Bhatnagar award, Institution of Engineers gold medal, Institution of Mineral Engineers awards and brought name fame and laurel to the department as well as Indian School of Mines
