The Department of Applied Geology is known at national and international level for its academic commitments, updating of syllabi of various academic programmes through induction of the state-of-the art topics to produce students who have created a name for themselves vis-á-vis this department both in India and abroad. The revision is done keeping in mind the changing impetus and industrial requirements vis-á-vis the entry of MNC’s in the field of Mineral exploration and Petroleum Exploration and hydro-power construction industries. Emphasis is also been placed for applied aspects of coal geology for industrial requirements like coalification and gasification, coal- bed methane and future gas hydrate potentialities in Indian off-shore.
Undergraduate Studies :
(i) Two year M. Sc. in Applied Geology since 1999 (to be discontinued in 2008)
(ii) Three year M. Sc. (Tech.) in Applied Geology since 1967.
(iii) Five year Integrated M. Sc. (Tech.) in Applied Geology since 2006.

Entrance Mode: For Integrated M. Sc. (Tech.) admission is through JEE of IIT System and for other two courses ISM entrance examination held in May every year
Post-Graduate Studies :
(i) Two-year M. Tech. in Mineral Exploration since 1976
(ii) Two-year M. Tech. in Engineering Geology since 1978
(iii) Two-year M. Tech. in Petroleum Exploration since 1980
These three M. Tech. courses are unique in the country because of highly specialized nature.
Entrance Mode: GATE score and interview held in May/June every year.
Ph. D. Studies :
Since 1967, when Indian school of Mines received Deemed University status, nearly around two hundred scholars of this Department have successfully completed their research work and obtained Ph.D. degree of Indian School of Mines. The doctoral theses completed during the last 40 years covers vast areas of research all over India.
Entrance Mode: NET/GATE score / ISM Fellowship Examination and interview. ISM Fellowship Examinations are held twice in a year (June/July; December/ January).
