Department of Physics and Mathematics was established in 1926 at the time of inception of Indian School of Mines. The department was given an independent status in 1989. The research work in the field of Mechanics of solids and Theoretical seismology started in 1974 and the teaching of M.Phil in Applied Mathematics started in 1980. Forty three scholars have obtained Ph.D degree and few are under examination. Sixty five got their M.Phil degree in Applied Mathematics. Our Ph.D students are well placed in academic institutions/R&D organizations like DRDO, CSIR labs. and occupying high positions. The total research publications in International and National Journals are more than 480. Currently, there are 16 faculty members with varied research interests. Contributions by the faculty in research have won recognition of the scientific community, in the form of prestigious National Mineral Award, Manganese Ore of India Young Scientist Award, Subarna-Sashibhusan Bhattacharya Memorial Award and Michael Madhusudan Award.

Our M.Sc. students are well placed in various Software/R&D/Academic organizations, like: Cognizant, TCS, WIPRO, Accenture, Larsen and Tubro, ISB Hyderabad, etc.
