The Department of Engineering was started at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, since the inception of the School in the year 1926. The role of the department was to train the students of Mining Engineering and later Petroleum Engineering in the core subjects of engineering as a service department till the year 1973; while later the department had imparted 13 weeks extensive training in the area of coal mining machineries to the graduate trainees in Mechanical and Electrical cadre of Bharat Coking Coal Limited, Dhanbad. In recognition of the expanding activities of the department, the school renamed the department as Department of Engineering & Mining Machinery in the year 1973. In pursuance of the human resource development activity in the field of Mining Machinery, the department launched the M.Tech. programme in Mining Machinery in 1975 and Drilling Engineering in 1978. The B.Tech programme in Mining Machinery Engineering was started in the year 1977. It is the first and only one of its kind in the country. This programme covers mechanical and electrical engineering aspects of various mining and construction machineries deployed at the underground and opencast mines in coal and non-coal sectors. Further, the department was allowed to run a postgraduate programme in Maintenance Engineering & Tribology starting in the year 1988. With the availability of basic infrastructure and expertise, the Institute recognized and felt the necessity to start the B.Tech. course in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1999. Subsequently the name of the department was changed to the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Mining Machinery Engineering in the year of 2002. Since the year 2003 this department started offering two B.Tech. degrees: one in Mechanical Engineering and the other in Mining Machinery Engineering in its convocation in 2004. Besides the undergraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Mining Machinery disciplines, presently department is also offering 3 (three) post graduate programmes in the following discipline :

  • Mining Machinery Engineering
  • Maintenance Engineering and Tribology
  • Mechanical Engineering (Specialisation in Manufacturing Sc.)

All students of the department of undergraduate and post graduate courses are well accepted in reputed public and private sector companies. Since 2004, above 20% of Mechanical Engineering degree holders are pursuing or completed their graduate studies in reputed universities/Institutes in American, European and Australian universities. Many of the pass outs of this department are also selected for courses in different IIMs, IITs and IISc. Many of the Mining Machinery Engineering degree holders have also found very suitable study offers from various universities of repute in abroad and IIMs. The department has equipped many of its laboratories with modern state of the art equipment and software along with potential research manpower to enhance the academic and research activities of the department. It is also rendering its services for doctoral research in various areas of Mechanical Engineering, Mining Machinery Engineering. Moreover, the department is active in imparting training to the practicing engineers through refresher courses and a large number of such programme have already been organized for the executives of various industries. The department has also established linkage with the different university departments abroad like:

  • University of Nottingham, U.K
  • University of Leeds, U.K
  • Imperial Collage of Science and Technology, U.K
  • University of Mining & Metallurgy, Crakaw, Poland
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Studies/ Cardiff University, U.K.
  • RWTH, Aachel University/Germany
  • Technical University of Košice, Slovakia
